He only made three major films before his premature death at the age of 24 - East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant - yet became, and still is one of the biggest cult figures ever to emerge from cinematic history. But why? This documentary about James Dean, written and directed by British rock journalist Ray Connolly, fails to crystalise Dean's contemporary, and continuing, appeal although some of the anecdotes related by an assembly of film folk provide much needed interest to an otherwise flat treatise on an exciting subject.
