An hilarious behind-the-scenes expose of the world of teenage beauty contests in the US that's a little gem of a film. Bruce Dern is excellent as a compulsively upbeat smalltown mobile home dealer and the contest's chief judge. And Michael Kidd, as the imported bigtime choreographer whose career is on the skids is the same Michael Kidd who starred with Gene Kelly in It's Always Fair Weather, won five Tony Awards on Broadway and choreographed the films Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Guys and Dolls, Star! and Hello Dolly! . There are also early meaty roles for Melanie Griffith and Annette O'Toole. Definitely one of the unsung best films of the Seventies, Smile failed to get a British cinema release.
