Brilliantly photographed in colour by Giuseppe Rotunno, this is in some ways a bigger-scale version of the 1960 British film Conspiracy of Hearts, in that it deals with the efforts of the religious communities in Italian towns in World War Two to help Jewish refugees escape from the Nazis. The treatment is resolutely superficial, but Ben Cross, James Mason (in his last film) and especially German actor Karl-Heinz Hackl do their best to make the characters spring to life.
