The second part of playwright Neil Simon's autobiographical trilogy (after Brighton Beach Memoirs) , this relates his 10 weeks of basic training in 1945 at an army boot camp in Mississippi for a war that was over before he could get to it. Matthew Broderick is just right as the young Simon and Christopher Walken has a field day as the eccentric sergeant with a plate in his head who drills his platoon to distraction. Affectionate, entertaining, funny and very well told, it's Simon at his best.
