There's a laugh and a thrill to be had in this witch's brew which has Sands as a 17th century warlock who escapes to 1988 to avoid being hanged and burned.
But he's pursued by the spirit of his sworn enemy (Richard E Grant) who rises from the grave to protect the heroine (Singer) - which is just as well as Sands has put a spell on her which ages her at the rate of 20 years a day.
"Nothing can be worse than this," she howls, presumably referring to her 60-year-old makeup.
So she sets out to trek with Grant to prevent Sands putting three parts of a book together (the Grand Grimoir), find out God's real name and reverse the Creation.
There's the inevitable race to get to the third part of the book, which lies in a tomb with a hex-mark on it.
Hex, you see, marks the spot. All this, plus good 'hex' music by Jerry Goldsmith, some good lines, pretty variable special effects and enjoyable unintentional humour.
