Say what you like about Tobe (Poltergeist) Hooper's films - and the script of this one is pretty uneven - but they all career along like a runaway train. So it is with this Quatermass-like tale, made on a grand scale. A crew of astronauts that obviously hasn't seen 'Alien' unwittingly brings terror from outer space back to Earth. We're set for a plot that - unusually for this kind of film - actually makes sense and gives us such gigantic and impressive sequences as London reeling under a veritable plague of vampirism. There are special effects to relish (the electric-blue 'lifeforce' is especially effective) and dialogue to treasure: 'The other two bodies', orders Professor Frank Finlay sternly.
