The Karate Kid Part II

Karate kid Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and his mentor Mr Miyagi (Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita) travel to Japan to settle a 50-year-old duel of honour. Returning to his father's sick bed, Miyagi is forced to face up to an old love rival Sato...so a battle to the death is arranged by an embittered landowner. More high kicks and high jinks in this follow-up to the wildly successful original. Listen out for Peter Cetera's Oscar-winning Glory of Love song.

The Karate Kid II

The success of The Karate Kid meant there had to be a sequel.

As follow-ups go, this is fair enough, although it hardly rivals the original.

Danny (Ralph Macchio) again takes on the bad guys, aided by his wise old tutor Miyagi ('Pat' Morita).

The action then changes when the couple go to Miyagi's native Okinawa and Danny becomes involved in a duel.

The balance between comforting familiarity and the new is struck fairly well and Morita obviously enjoys himself as he quotes pearls of Eastern wisdom, like 'Best way to avoid punch - no be there!'

There's a good storm sequence near the end, by which time you may be grateful for any touch of originality in such recycled twaddle.

Still, even though it might largely be more of the same, box-office takings showed that's just what Karate Kid fans wanted.

I think it's a very good film. It's sad when the father dies. A lot of action in it. I rate it 5 stars!
