A pleasant and occasionally very funny caper about a runaway robot that, having been struck by lightning, reprogrammes itself to believe it's alive. And, assimilating all the knowledge it can find and imitating any human function it can cope with, Number Five does become alive - as near as dammit. Unfortunately, it's also armed with an annihilating laser weapon. So the authorities want the escapee back and, with the help of an animal-hoarding girl (Ally Sheedy), Number Five must hide, run, dodge and fight with all the capacity it can find in its brainbox. The robot is really the whole show, especially when dancing with Sheedy in imitation of a Travolta video, and most of the fun stems from the information it 'gathers' from watching TV, especially when it reprogrammes three enemy robots to behave like The Three Stooges. Excellent for children, who will enjoy the odd rude word, Sheedy's house of animals and Number Five making mincemeat of the opposition.
