Some effective and quite erotic love scenes add to the poignancy of Peter Hyams' attempt to make a Brief Encounter-style love story in a war-torn setting. But the passions and attitudes that made such movies are long gone, and their spirit proves too elusive for Hyams to grasp. Faced with such odds, Harrison Ford and Lesley-Anne Down (both of whose hairstyles make only a passing acknowledgement to the Forties) are not equal to the demands placed upon them. In the supporting cast, Michael Sacks, as the pilot's hero navigator, impresses most, while the exciting last 20 minutes underline the fact that Hyams' true vocation - he also made Busting and Capricorn One - is for fast-moving chase-and-action sequences. (Ford replaced originally-cast Kris Kristofferson in the leading role).
