Still unmistakably a legendary figure of the west, even when wet-nursing an entire crew of sub-teenagers on a cattle drive, John Wayne's image remains impervious to the over-sentimentality inherent in this project. He strides through the story like a dinosaur that has triumphantly survived its own era. Good dust-rousing entertainment, uncompromising in its action scenes and with a shock or two before the end. Bruce Dern contributes another of the wild-eyed villains that were his speciality before his characters reached respectability a few years later.
