There's plenty of creeping around in the dark to satisfy fright fans during the grisly proceedings in this distant relative of The Beast With Five Fingers.
James Horner's haunting music, though, is superior to Oliver Stone's direction of his intriguing script.
Michael Caine, sneaking about with narrowed eyes, is the artist who loses his hand; special effects wizard Carlo Rambaldi, who worked on Alien, is the man in charge of its nocturnal perambulations.
Not many hands were put together, though, to applaud this one.
