Richard Widmark gives a fine, crumpled, world-weary performance as New York detective Max Brock, who retires to what he expects will be his swish California ranch, but finds it a wreck -- and soon his native American manager (Henry Darrow) is arrested for murdering the sheriff with a bow and arrow. Naturally, this is a cue for Widmark to carry on sleuthing, when he sniffs out that Darrow has been framed. With a good cast and a nicely judged, wry tone, this enjoyable would-be pilot could have been a contender in the hit TV series stakes, for Widmark to follow up his then just finished Madigan show.
