A very violent true story about a mixed-race Australian at the turn of the century who, ill-treated beyond belief by a succession of white masters, went berserk and killed two of the families that had caused him so much pain. Fred Schepisi's film of these events is beautifully composed and skilfully made, even if it doesn't entirely avoid dull spots and is sometimes hard to follow. Tommy Lewis is extraordinarily naturalistic as the much-abused Jimmie, and there are other good performances from Freddy Reynolds as his blood brother, and from Angela Punch as his ever-suffering wife.
