So many classic authors of fantasy, the macabre and science fiction, from J Sheridan Le Fanu to Ray Bradbury, have had the strength of their work diluted by successive film-makers, that one can only concede the power of the printed word over the image in this particular genre. Here it's the fate of prolific science-fiction novelist John Lymington to have his work converted from the chilling to the conventional, although Terence Fisher's direction makes the most of the contrast between the false security of the island hotel, and the unknown menace that hangs oppressively over the surrounding countryside. Hammer regulars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee look suitably grim. Co-stars Patrick Allen and Sarah Lawson are real-life man and wife.
