The actress first attracted attention as the mean-spirited cheerleader who switches bodies with Rob Schneider in The Hot Chick.
The daughter of a truck driver and a nurse, she was originally a keen skater and enjoyed the sport competitively.
McAdams attended the Original Kids Theatre Company in London and made her stage debut in a stage version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
She made her TV debut in Shotgun Love Dolls and Guilt By Association before starring in the 2002 feature My Name Is Tanino.
The same year she starred in the drama Perfect Pie before director Tom Brady cast her in The Hot Chick.
In 2004 she played queen bitch Regina in Mean Girls and southern belle Allie in the tearjerker The Notebook.
Recent work includes Owen Wilson's love interest in the comedy Wedding Crashers and the Wes Craven thriller Red Eye opposite Cillian Murphy.
