Unbelievably this pretentious French “musical” was nominated for the 2007 Palme d’Or.
Even more insufferable than Honore's previous Dans Paris, none of the players in the menage-a-trois display the faintest glimmer of likeability, and the movie's set-up is absurd where it would love to be daring.
Honore regular Garrel lets his huge mop of hair do the acting and his charisma subsequently halts at the hairline, but Hesme and the ever-reliable Sagnier manage to keep the sorry affair afloat despite the director's leaden script threatening to sink the movie at any moment.
Thirteen (count 'em!) musical numbers would have given Gene Kelly pause for thought, and Honore is no master of the big screen dance number.
Despite wanting favourable comparisons to the classic Franco musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, this is a case of rhyme but no reason.
