Based on the hit computer game, this is a classic sci-fi action horror about a group of marines sent to investigate 'what went wrong' on a space station, only to face an evil unlike any other.

Die hard fans of the game do not panic - it rocks.

Although the references to the game are not overt to the point that they're detrimental to the plot, there's enough to keep those that are looking for such things happy.

It's difficult not to love films that use a montage of talking guns to introduce the main characters - Goat, Duke, The Kid, Pinky, Hell Knight, Sarge, Mac and last but not least, The Reaper.

Straight away you know what you're going to get: zombies getting the limbs blown off in a various gruesome ways. Cool. Doom

You can imagine the initial pitch to the studio heads - it's Aliens meets Resident Evil. And they're not ashamed of it one little bit.

Bold, gorey and exactly what you'd expect, the dedication to getting the feel of the game and the special effects right carries this through in spite of the well-worn plot.

In fact it's almost like going back to the days of Predator and Robocop - when people got shot in those movies they bled gallons of movie blood - something the Doom-mongers have in abundance.

When The Rock was interviewed for Skymovies.com, he explained; "Well I play Sarge in this movie and he has the most fantastic character arch: he’s a man that finds god."

Pause

"And then he's thinks, 'what the hell'!"

Wise words from the man with the Biggest F****** Gun in the universe.

I can't tell you how surprised I was at how purely entertaining this film is. Making a film based on a computer game is usually a huge mistake made by film makers and investors but this film has broken the mould. It's sort of Schwarzenegger-esque, by that I mean it's like a film he would have done back in the 80s. The Rock is filling Arnie's shoes very well. Like the Alien films it has quite a chlaustrophobic quality and is packed with mind blowing action and not a bad script.

Excellent movie.. brings back memories from the original games back in the early 90's. Incidentally.. Doom was the first person game ever, after wolkenstein 3D. This movie is excellent, worth a view for any gamer fan, and just love the first person action near the end of the movie, a little cheesy, but still a cool touch.
