You wouldn't think that the story of a naturally gifted athlete who rose fairly smoothly through the ranks to fame would make much of a drama - and so it proves, in this plodding but earnest sports biopic about golfing great and all-round nice guy Bobby Jones. Following the golfing legend's life in the early 20th century, from boyhood to his twenties (when he is played by Jim Caviezel), this film charts his success until his retirement at the tender age of 28. We discover how he overcame various difficulties (mainly his temper, varicose veins, separation from his family and exhaustion), but the trouble is, there's nothing terribly dramatic in his life - he would seem to be simply a talented sportsman and likeable gentleman who tried to do the right thing. And that, sadly, doesn't make for gripping viewing. With its long, loving shots of sun-dappled green after sun-dappled green, this one's for golf enthusiasts only.
