After enrolling on the writing course at the University of Southern California, Hoge attempted to make a feature...but ran out of money.
Drifting through a series of temp jobs, he landed a two-year post as a teacher in the Los Angeles juvenile court system.
"I don’t want to use controversy to sell a film. I feel like it’s kind of odious to do that."
The subject was the basis for his screenplay for The United States of Leland, which attracted the attention of Kevin Spacey.
After intially agreeing to produce the film, Spacey eventually came on board with the role of a cynical writer.
