It was Shyamalan's blend of paranormal and psychological realism that made his breakthrough movie, The Sixth Sense, which grossed nearly £450m worldwide and garnered six Oscar nominations.
He said: "I like the challenge of making a B film that resonates. I like taking B subjects and treating them with A ethics and an A approach, an A crew, an 'A' cast."
He said his most significant cinematic influences were Night Of The Living Dead, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.
