Firth is a British actor who had a few minor film roles before creating a sensation as the emotionally troubled youth in Equus, the play by Peter Shaffer.
He repeated his role in the 1977 movie version, earning an Academy Award nomination but failing to amass much success from his triumph.
Since then, Peter has appeared onscreen regularly, most notably in The Hunt For Red October, which broke box office records in 1990, and Spielberg's materpiece, Amistad, in 1997.
