A loose remake of the 1947 Robert Mitchum thriller Out of the Past, which we saw over here as Build My Gallows High. It's not bad on the whole, laced with contemporary sex and violence as well as miles of footage of lovely Mexican beaches and a shoot-out (a long time coming) that's like the gangster equivalent of a Sergio Leone Western. Veteran Richard Widmark easily steals the acting honours from Jeff Bridges, underplaying, James Woods, overplaying, and Rachel Ward, hardly playing at all. The music provides the intensity and the offbeat element that the movie badly needs elsewhere. Jane Greer and Paul Valentine, co-stars in the Mitchum original, make cameo appearances here.
