The actress first grabbed the public's attention as Tess Trueheart in the live action movie of the cartoon Dick Tracy.
After studying drama in New York, Headly attended the American College of Switzerland on a scholarship.
Returning to the US, she moved to Chicago and joined David Mamet's New Works Ensemble.
Headly acted opposite future husband John Malkovich in Sam Shepard's The Curse of the Starving Class before joining the famed Steppenwolf Theater Company, where Malkovich was also a member.
Headly is often cast as devoted mothers, wives and friends in upper middle-brow dramatic fare, thoughtful comedies, and the occasional odd film.
She was the concerned mother of a lonely dreamy girl in the outstanding fantasy Paperhouse and a worthy foil to conmen Michael Caine and Steve Martin in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
She was the feisty wife of Bruce Willis in Mortal Thoughts and starred in Getting Even With Dad with Macaulay Culkin and Ted Danson.
In 1995, she appeared alongside Richard Dreyfuss in Mr. Holland's Opus and also starred in the big screen version of Sgt Bilko with Steve Martin.
TV work includes ER and X-Files and she went on to appear on the big screen in Breakfast of Champions and Mike Figgis' Timecode.
In 2001, she played Vivian in the off-kilter Bartleby and also starred in the Martin Lawrence comedy What's the Worst That Could Happen?
She starred in the ensemble black comedy Eulogy and appeared in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.
Recent work has included the role of a Danish geriatric nurse in the drama Around The Bend.
