Made before Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's celebrated 'Law of Desire' and 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown', this also stars his favourite leading lady, the statuesque Carmen Maura. She displays a mastery of comic timing with deadpan delivery as a housewife trapped in a thankless existence, who only survives the daily grind thanks to a constant supply of amphetamines. Pitched somewhere between the high camp of John Waters and bleakness of Germany's Fassbinder, this blackest of comedies is a must-see for fans of the offbeat.
