Director Ken Loach's acclaimed naturalistic drama about a 15-year-old working-class northerner whose life revolves around his pet kestrel. Starring David Bradley and Colin Welland.
Both uplifting and upsetting, this was director Ken Loach's second film and, in spite of the difficulty in understanding the regional accents, it remains one of his best.
Loach graphically portrays man's inhumanity to boy, as little David Bradley tames a kestrel and trains it to fly to him. Don't expect a happy ending: this is British realist cinema very nearly at its best.

Ken Loach created a wonderful film story here. The story of a simple boy, played by David Bradley, who is the scorn of the class. Little do they realise that he learns and rears a kestrel. However, the performance of Colin Welland as the sympatheic teacher is superb. Brian Glover as the PE teacher is hilarious. Loach's direction is superb and at times the film can cause a tear to shed. An emotional film which, for the time, deserved all its plaudits.
