The actor attracted critical acclaim for his portrayal of the grandfather in Liev Shreiber's road movie Everything Is Illuminated.
After graduating from the Russian Drama School Theatrical Institute, he worked for the theatre company Toustou Nogov for 28 years.
With a couple of Russian movies under his belt, he emigrated to American in 1979 but could only find work as messenger because of his poor English.
He was making his third attempt to gain a license as a taxi driver when director John Schlesinger cast him in The Falcon and the Snowman seven years after he last acted.
Subsequent appearances included Cadillac Man, Men in Black (as the cook), The Vampire's Kiss and Third Watch.
In 1985, he became professor of acting at New York University and is married to the former classical dancer Kelly Hogan.
