Passion drums in the Deep South, and beats in the hearts of all men who meet Rose (Laura Dern). Quite happy to open up her petals to anyone who catches a whiff of her scent, this little nymphomaniac of the magnolia belt is devastating to the small community into which she's taken as a maid by the Hillyer family during the Depression. Before a few weeks are out, she's thrown herself at Daddy (Robert Duvall), popped into bed with the family's 13-year-old son (Lukas Haas) who helps himself to an impromptu sex lesson, and teeters around town in a dress that reveals more than it covers. Surprisingly, the film of Rose's misadventures aims at charm and atmosphere rather than titillation. Laura Dern is quite good as Rose, but Diane Ladd and Duvall are rather mannered and artificial as her employers. Nonetheless, Dern and Ladd were both nominated for Academy Awards, making them the first real-life mother and daughter to be so.
