Terry Gilliam - a director with a track record more variable than a Premiership manager - struck gold with this supremely emotional tale of love and redemption. Jeff Bridges is on fine form as a sad ex-DJ while Robin Williams turns the irritance factor down to play the professor-turned-vagrant. Their chemistry is explosive and the film marks one of Gilliam's artistic highs.

A stylish and visionary emotional fantasy from director Terry Gilliam.

This entwines the sorry life of former cult deejay Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) with that of former history professor Parry (Robin Williams), who has become a vagrant in the big city.

How these two lost souls discover salvation and the meaning of life through each other makes an excellent, dark movie that merges moments of deep melodrama with sudden shafts of happiness.

A real treat, with a career-best performance from Mercedes Ruehl as Bridges' girlfriend that won her the Oscar as best supporting actress.

A bit of characterisation at last - being helped to understand the why behind the characters' actions, and an interesting delve into psychiatry. Ok, a bit of the "insensitive guy discovers sensitivity" theme, but not too hard to suspend disbelief, and enough "oh come on!" to keep you watching. Worth watching just to see both Bridges and Williams act without the overused pseudo comic clich鳠that became annoying so soon after they became their hallmarks.
