This quirky comedy, dipped in various shades of grey and black (with a dash of red for the blood it spills) is off the beaten track in more ways than one. For a start, it's set in the wilds of Montana. That's where crooked Monte (KeithCarradine) heads, with a fortune in emeralds hidden inside the horse he's riding, and having ditched his associates, demented psycho Tom Waits and voracious blonde Sally Kirkland. Carradine's destination is the ranch of his brother (Bill Pullman), where he aims to - well, it's never clear what Monte aims to do -'ceptin' he never gits around to doin' it. Meanwhile, the gruesome twosome pursue some. And one of the twists to this strange, beautifully-photographed film is that Waits is a real psycho who actually kills people. Full of half-funny comic touches and off-kilter dialogue, the film is stolen from all the stars (including Rip Torn, tombstone-toothed Vincent Schiavelli and a guest shot from Jeff Bridges) by the natural warmth of Kathleen York as Pullman's wife.
