The Oxford graduate made his big screen debut with his adaptation of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche.
A renowned documentary maker, he first came to the attention as a dramatist with his BBC serial Warriors about British troops in Bosnia.
After graduating with a chemistry degree from Oxford, where he toured a production of Twelth Night with fellow student Hugh Grant, he worked for the BBC.
As a documentary-maker, he made award-winner programmes about The Falklands War, Cambodia and the BAFTA-nominated Ulster documentary Shoot To Kill.
After Wuthering Heights in 1992, he went on to make his account of UNICEF's work in The Daying of the Light and the BAFTA-winning account of child abuse No Child of Mine.
Warriors won a BAFTA and Emmy for its gritty portrayal of peacekeepers in the Balkans and he followed it with the TV dramas Walking on the Moon and Innocents.
Recent work includes his second feature - White Oleander - with Michelle Pfeiffer and Renee Zellwegger about an LA teenager put into foster care.
