This was the third of three Christopher Columbus films released in the summer of 1992 to mark the 500th anniversary of the explorer's discovery of America. Although it was definitely a case of saving the best until last, even this spectacularly mounted version is a deeply flawed film, not least in the way of pacing. Backed by millions of dollars from the Spanish government, it features French superstar Gérard Depardieu, visually in commanding form, but mangling the English language a shade too far as Columbus, and director Ridley Scott delivering some stunning action visuals in his own distinctive style. But the acting honours are stolen from all and sundry by Michael Wincott, playing the blackest, most sadistic villain seen in a major film for many a long day.
