Disney's attempt to portray the 1899 New York newsboys' strike through genial song and dance entertains well, despite its box office flop. Robert Duvall is a bit of a cardboard cutout as newspaper millionaire Joseph Pulitzer, who upsets hordes of young 'newsies' by upping the cost each one must pay for his papers, but Ann-Margret amuses as a dance hall madam who's a mentor to the kids. And a young Christian Bale kicks up a storm in the song and dance numbers, which are imaginative and enjoyable, and almost recall Hollywood's heyday.
