The director made his feature debut with Home on the Range - said to be Disney's last film featuring 2-D animation.
As a supervising animator, he gave life to characters including Cogsworth the Clock in Beauty and the Beast and Iago the moulting parrot in Aladdin.
He graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1970 and was taken under thw wing of animation legend Eric Larson.
Finn joined Disney as a trainee on The Fox and the Hound and then left to work with Don Bluth on The Secret of Nimh as well as on arcade games.
He returned to Disney as an animator on Oliver & Company and went on to work on The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers Down Under and Beauty and the Beast.
After success with Pocahontas he headed the story department for The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
In 2000, he was part of the directing team behind El Dorado, featuring the voices of Kenneth Branagh and Elton John, and in 2004 directed Home on the Range.
