Is it a black comedy? Is it an offbeat romance? Is it a murder thriller? Or an intimate drama about the relationship between a mother and a daughter down the years? This film from the fashionable Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar is certainly his least boring so far - and will definitely keep you guessing to the end, even if it does go on a bit. And you can't wholly dislike a film where the female jailblock inmates go into a dance number while confessed murderess Victoria Abril awaits her fate. She's reunited with her singing-star mother after many years of neglect on both sides, ditched by her loutish husband and seduced by a transvestite entertainer. But is she guilty? That will keep you hopping at least until a couple of reels before the end and even then Almódovar isn't finished with the twists - or is he? In between titillating and tantalising, the director occasionally loses his grip - so take care not to nod off in the middle.
