This romance is offbeat all right, but pretty sad too: its lovers don't stand a chance of anything permanent in the world. Joon (Juniper) - Mary Stuart Masterson - is a mentally fragile young woman living, on the edge of tantrums and rages, in the care of her brother Benny (Aidan Quinn) who has just lost their latest housekeeper to one of Joon's fits. Into their lives comes Sam (Johnny Depp), a semi-literate simpleton who dresses like Buster Keaton, has an innate mastery of silent-film comedy techniques and toasts bread with a steam iron. Joon falls heavily: Benny throws Sam out. The lovers run away but Joon is overcome by noises in her head and ends up in a psychiatric hospital. There's a happy ending - of sorts. Delicately played by its leading trio, but especially by Aidan Quinn in the most difficult of the three roles, this is an admirable, but unenjoyable and pretty despairing film.
