George Herman 'Babe' Ruth is one of America's greatest sporting legends, a burly baseball hero who also had a passion for wine, women and food. Thankfully this old-fashioned but gritty biopic (which never saw the light of day in British cinemas) doesn't completely whitewash the off-field life of the great man. Roseanne star John Goodman fills out every inch of the big basher, truculently dominating the film, and, thanks to great make-up, he's a dead ringer for the Babe too. Kelly McGillis is quietly competent as Ruth's second wife. You don't have to be a complete baseball nut to enjoy this film - but it does help. For that kind of fan, at least, The Babe hits a home run.
