This acclaimed Spanish film from director Bigas Luna translates as Salami, Salami in English, but certainly has more than cured ham on the menu. It's a clever, erotic black comedy laced with liberal dashes of melodrama. The action centres on the misadventures in love and war of two families from different classes and what happens after the daughter of one becomes pregnant by her boss's spoiled son. Cheeky and irreverent scenes stick in the mind long after the closing credits have rolled, including a fight to the death with two shanks of ham used as clubs, a lineup of male models testing Y-fronts at an underwear factory and a sex scene under the shadow of a huge billboard in the shape of a bull whose testicles are later used as an umbrella. Not for the easily offended, as you can tell, this was still a sleeper hit on the European arthouse circuit.
