A light-hearted, witty romantic comedy from Spain that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1994, this polished piece from director Fernando Trueba is elegance and charm itself. Set in the early Thirties and beautifully photographed by Pedro Almodóvar's regular cameraman Jose Luis Alcaine: you would never guess that the Spanish Civil War was about to break out. There's not a single whiff of politics in the whisper-thin plot of romantic entanglements at a country house, even though our hero (Jorge Sanz) is an army deserter on the run. All we are concerned with here are the attractions he holds for four beautiful sisters: and, in this amusing, light-as-air erotic fantasy, that's quite enough.
