If you can ignore Richard Gere's far-too-modern Lancelot - an expert in martial arts - this is a stylish and gorgeously-shot version of the Camelot legend. Sean Connery's gruff authority and Julia Ormond's icy beauty are perfect for Arthur and Guinevere and, if Merlin is sadly missed, the piece works well as a medieval romance with the accent on character development rather than non-stop action. Best known for such modern comedies as Ghost and Ruthless People, director Jerry Zucker has a surprisingly sure feel for the period and its people here.
