Nothing is what it seems to be in this superbly entertaining black comedy from the Coen Brothers. Amateur bowler, White Russian swilling and professional stoner 'The Dude' Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) is beaten up in mistake for the Big Lebowski, a wheelchair-bound millionaire. But when 'The Dude' goes to see his namesake to protest, the millionaire persuades him to deliver a $1million ransom for his nubile young wife, who appears to have been kidnapped, instead. Matters escalate when Bridges' pals, the short-fused John Goodman and the meek Steve Buscemi help him bungle the drop and then things just get plain crazy. No matter, for this oddball movie, which is one of the best things Bridges has done, has plenty of laughs.
