Live Flesh

Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar's complex erotic thriller about a love triangle in 1990s Madrid. Based on Ruth Rendell's psychological novel, it stars Javier Bardem as the cop crippled by a pizza delivery man during an argument. Four years later they again meet up to fight over a woman. Trivia: The literal translation of the title in Spanish is "trembling flesh".

The film is based on a Ruth Rendell mystery novel.

Spain. Victor becomes besotted with a diplomat's druggie daughter and gains access to her flat.

Cops Sancho, who has a faithless (and beaten) wife Clara, and David see the young couple struggling and burst in. In the ensuing confusion, David is shot and paralysed. Victor goes to jail.

Out years later, he launches a revenge scheme involving the seduction of an all-too-willing Clara... Live Flesh

This erotic, crudely-scripted drama in typically irreverent style by director Pedro Almodóvar, but remains curiously unsatisfying.

It's like one of those films from France where the leading couple are destined to end up together but take a few years getting there.

Add an unexpected burst of violence at the end, and the director's usual elements of pseudo-sexy talk, and hot (though never explicit) sex, and you have a seething brew whose elements may entertain you, even if they never quite mix.
