This stylistic and sentimental drama from director Jago Van Dormael is world's away from his debut feature 'Toto the Hero'. Very much in the vein of, and at times almost plagiarising, 'Rain Man', 'Forrest Gump' and even 'Being There', it tells the familiar story of an uptight bloke - Harry (Daniel Auteil) an overworked salesman who's social and family life is in tatters - who meets and reluctantly befriends a man, Georges (Pascal Duquenne), who has Down's Syndrome. They embark on an odyssey together that results in self-enlightenment, spiritual rebirth and, of course, tragedy. Both leads shared the Best Actor award at Cannes in 1996, something made more remarkable by the fact that Duquenne actually suffers from Down's. Both men are powerful, intense and pathetic in turn, and the film is only let down by the seemingly harsh finale which leaves you feeling cheated. Worthy, but ultimately disappointing.
