In terms of sheer old-fashioned enjoyment, you'd be hard pressed to find a movie as good as this swashbuckling epic adventure from French director Phillippe de Broca.
Daniel Auteuil plays the lowly-born master swordsman Lagadere, who becomes firm friends with the Duke of Nevers (Vincent Perez) after teaching him an impossible fencing thrust.
When Nevers is assassinated, Lagadere saves his infant daughter and swears he will avenge his former comrade.
The film really has something for everyone: peerless heroes and wicked villains, as well as an inexhaustible supply of action, comedy and romance.
And if you are wondering why the film is called Le Bossu - which translates to The Hunchback - well, you'll just have to watch it to find out.
