This somewhat fictionalised story of how Orson Welles had to fight to make, and then release Citizen Kane, forms a fascinating addendum to two of Welles' most formidable works, Kane itself and The Trial. Liev Schreiber, as Welles, and John Malkovich, as his writing partner Herman Mankiewicz, give relaxed, unselfconscious performances that reflect well on director Benjamin Ross, who also gets a stand-out showing from Britain's Brenda Blethyn as gossip columnist Louella Parsons. Some of those impersonating famous figures of the period tend to be walking waxworks, but, overall, this is seventh heaven for film buffs. Golden Globe winner as best telefilm of its year.
