Perhaps this animated version of Jesus' life will only really stir the children. The splendid Russian-made clay figures detract from the gravity of the tale and, despite an impressive voice cast, such notable actors as Ralph Fiennes (Jesus), Miranda Richardson (Mary Magdalene), Ian Holm and William Hurt are flat and uninspired in their roles. The story brings in all key New Testament moments such as the raising of Lazarus and the Last Supper, but offers nothing new for the viewer familiar with the Bible story. Welsh-language version: Ioan Gruffudd as Jesus, Lisa Palfrey as Mary Magdalene, with Matthew Rhys and Ian Saynor.
