The actor won a legion of admirers in his big screen debut - the Australian tap dancing drama Bootmen.
Subsequent high-profile appearances have included WWII drama Hart's War and the bleak coming-of-age drama Somersault.
After graduating from Australia's National Drama Institute in 1998 he made Bootman, for which he was nominated for an Australian Film Institute Award.
After Hart's War - alongside Bruce Willis - he starred Bryan Brown and Toni Collette in the David Caesar-directed comedy Dirty Deeds in 2001.
He appeared alongside David Wenham and Timothy Spall in Gettin' Square the following year.
Worthington landed the best actor award at the Australian Film Awards for Somersault, which also starred Abbie Cornish.
In 2004, he directed the comic short Enzo, which was selected as a finalist in Tropfest 2004.
