This enjoyable romp, set in 1813 when England and France were at war, is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's tale, St Ives, about a French captain, Jacques St Ives (Jean-Marc Barr). The handsome captain is so envied by his fellow officers that, to avoid constant challenges to duels, he requests a demotion. But his commanding officer is so furious at this that he demotes St Ives to private and he is subsequently sent to the front line where British soldiers capture him. Sent to a PoW camp in Scotland, St Ives soon attracts the attention of local beauty Flora (Anna Friel). But she is lusted after by the camp commandant, Major Chevening (Richard E Grant), who is in turn drooled over by Flora's aunt Susan (Miranda Richardson). It's a well-acted, lushly produced, lusty comic farce with plenty of dashing men and bodice ripping action. Feather-light fun.
