The underrated Eric Stoltz gives an admirable star turn as a drug addict living in Los Angeles, who, when searching for a fix, foolishly steals a case full of cash from a gang's hit-man. Deciding to scoot off back home to Galveston, Texas, he looks up a couple of his old buddies to start his life over. But he puts everyone in mortal peril because, of course, the gangsters soon start sniffing him out. This neat premise is nicely developed in an excellent, edgy made-for-cable TV movie, which throughout is taut, fast-paced, gripping, well-acted and atmospheric. Part-written by co-star Billy Bob Thornton, this is a must for fans of American noirish low-life thrillers.
