Director Ken Loach is back on the social realism beat with this convincingly acted conscientious and commendable tale, set in 1995, about a group of South Yorkshire rail-track workers told that a private company is taking over from British Rail. Naturally, the reconstruction of the rail network soon has devastating effects on their lives. Loach is certainly on the right lines with both the humour, truth and poignancy in the script, and Joe Duttine is ideally on track, too, as the main character, Paul. Essential viewing for all commuters, it would all be very funny if it wasn't quite so serious.
