An engrossing but harrowing look at a family's lives turned upside down, framed round a mother being arrested for child abuse and thrown in jail. The story has its clichés, but careful character development and fine portrayals, particularly by Sigourney Weaver as the accused, David Strathairn as her husband and Julianne Moore as a family friend, keep this out of the rut. With all the misery, though, it's gruelling stuff.
